Joseph G,
There's some stuff called Neet's Foot Oil, it's made to use on leather. I've used it to waterproof my boots and it works great. It is very absorbant. So I think it will work on your shoe's, it should penetrate right to your problem area.

I have a pair of dress shoes where the leather is hard and "squeeks". How do I soften the leather?
You can use mink oil, it will soften and condition the leather.
Reply:Wear them around the house to break them in. Also, if you'll look in the shoe polish section, you'll find something called leather lotion or leather conditioner. If you apply this to your shoes, it makes the leather soft and supple. It keeps it from cracking too.
Reply:put some goose grease on them
Reply:Try polishing them with olive oil.
Reply:Get an oil sponge for you shoes. They may be dry.
Also, wearing them around the house to break them in helps a lot.
